PART 2 BIBLE LESSON 2
“The Hidden Treasure”
<< BACK TO MENU NEXT LESSON >>
A long time ago, in a faraway country, a poor man rented a field to plant grain in. The ground was hard and full of stones. Plowing the field was very hard work.

The man tried to keep happy by thinking how the grain would help his family. Some of it would be food for them in the winter. Some of the grain he would sell to buy clothes and other things his family needed. But the soil in the field was poor, and there was never enough grain to take care of all the things they needed.
When his plow hit something hard, the man thought he had run into another stone. He began to dig around the stone so he could carry it out of the field. But instead of a stone, he found an earthenware jar. The plow had broken the jar, and the man could see it was full of gold and jewels.

Quickly, the man covered up the treasure again, so no one else would see it. Then he ran home and began to sell everything he owned. His family and friends thought he was crazy, but he would not tell anyone why he was selling all his belongings. At last, he even sold his little house. Then he had enough money to buy the field.

Happily, the poor man ran to the house of the man who owned the field. The poor man paid the price for the field and then he called his family to help him carry the treasure away. Now they had enough money for a big new house, warm clothes and lots of fields with good soil for growing grain. The man was happy he had sold everything he owned to buy the field with the treasure in it. Now he was rich.

Jesus told this story to His disciples to show them how wonderful heaven is. He said heaven is like the treasure. It is worth more than everything we have on earth. The most wonderful thing about this treasure is that everyone can have it. The Bible, the Word of God, is our map to this heavenly treasure. Jesus said if we read the Bible and do the things it tells us, we are storing up heavenly treasure. No one can ever steal this treasure from us. Every day we can open the Bible and read God’s precious Word. The Bible will lead us to heaven.

Jesus is our guide. He will help us to find the treasure of heaven, and he will walk right beside us all the way. Before we read the Bible, we should ask Him to help us understand what we read and to teach us the lessons we need to learn. We can ask Him to guide us to the verses that will help us.

Jesus told his disciples another story about a treasure, a special jewel. Jesus said, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.”

The people Jesus talked to knew how merchants traveled to many countries. They bought beautiful silks, spices, jewels and perfumes. One merchant
found a wonderful pearl. It was the largest, purest pearl he had ever seen. It was fit for a king’s crown.

The merchant wanted very much to be the one who would sell this pearl to the king, but he did not have enough money to buy it. So he sold everything he had—his camels, the jewels he had already bought, the perfumes, the silks and everything else he had. Then he bought the wonderful pearl.

Heaven, the home Jesus has made for us, is like this wonderful pearl. We must give all we have to Jesus, and then He gives us the wonderful pearl, a home in heaven. If the merchant had sold everything but his silks, he could not have bought the pearl of great price. We cannot have a home in heaven if we keep back something from Jesus.

If we hold our minds back from Jesus, and think anything we please, whether it is good or bad, we are not giving Him our all. We should give Him our tongues so the things we say will be pure. We should give Him our hands, so the things we do will please God. We must give Him all, and this is a small price to pay for the heavenly home He promises us.

On the Bible Trail
The pearl we are all seeking is found in Revelation 21:21. Read other verses that mention treasure in Luke 6:45 and Matthew 6:19 and 20. Also see what King David wrote about how the Bible guides us to heaven in Psalm 119:105

Treasure Chest Verse
Our Treasure Chest Verse tells us why we should be careful where our treasure is: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:21
