PART 3 BIBLE LESSON 13
“Where Are We Going”
<< BACK TO MENU PART 4 LESSON 1 >>
Jesus was gone. His disciples had watched as He rose to heaven, surrounded by a cloud of angels.

They were very sad and lonely without Jesus. But they remembered His promises. “Let not your heart be troubled,” Jesus had told them. “You believe in God; believe also in Me. In my Father’s house there are many mansions,
I am going to get a place ready for you. Then I will come back and take you home with Me, so that you may be where I am.”

This promise was a great comfort to the disciples. It is a great comfort today to everyone who loves Jesus. No matter what happens to us here, we know that he will come again. He will take us home with Him and we will live with Him forever.
What is this home like that Jesus said He is preparing for us?

“Behold,” He said, “I create new heavens and a new earth.” The old heavens
and earth will be burned up when Satan and sin are destroyed.

This will be a time of great terror for those who hate Jesus. But he has promised
to be by the side of those who love and trust Him. “All the wicked shall burn up in that day, but to you who fear My name, the Sun of Righteousness shall rise with healing in His wings.” Jesus is that Sun of Righteousness. When everything
old and evil has been burned away, Jesus will create a new heaven and a new earth. And what a wonderful place it will be!

Jesus tells us our eternal home will be a real place. There will be houses and trees, rivers and gardens. Little children will play. There will be many interesting things for everyone to do. No one will get tired or bored or sick. No one in that wonderful home will ever be sad. No one will die.

No homes will be broken by divorce or death; no children will become orphans.
There will be no wars, no quarrels, no anger or hatred. We will never lose anything by theft or fire or because there isn’t enough money. No landlord will throw us out of our homes. No bank will foreclose on our property. We will plant gardens and enjoy the food we grow. We will never be hungry again. We will never lose the beautiful things God gives us.

The animals in our new home will be as gentle and tame as they were in the Garden of Eden. “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard with the young goat. The calf and the young lion will play together, the cow and the bear will graze side by side,” the Bible tells us. “And a little child shall lead them.”
No person or animal will ever be afraid or hurt or lonely again. Every sin will have been forgiven. Satan and sin will have been destroyed and sin will never rise again. All will be peace and happiness forever and ever.

The most wonderful thing about our new home is that Jesus and our Father will be with us.

There will be a special city, New Jerusalem.

The city will be brightly lit day and night with the glory of Jesus and of the Father. The city will have streets of gold, the River of Life and the Tree of Life. We may eat fruit from the tree and drink the clear, pure water of the river that flows from God’s throne.

Nothing will ever again come between us and the Lord, who made us and died for us.

Once, when Jesus told His disciples that He would be going away, He meant that He would be leaving this earth for heaven.

“How can we follow?” they asked. “We don’t know where you are going, and we don’t know the way.”

Jesus answered, “Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me . . . I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Jesus is the way, the only way to the eternal home. With Him, we can’t miss.
“Abide in My love,” Jesus says. “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

This is the way of Jesus, the way of those who will live with Him in the heavenly home.

Will you bow your head just now and thank Him for preparing a wonderful
home in heaven for you? And He would be so happy if you would tell Him you want to accept Him into your life so you can live with Him forever.

On the Bible Trail

years before Jesus was born know about the heavenly home? Did they know Christ would come some day and take His people there? Read Job 19:25-27.

How real is the place Jesus will take us to? Read what the prophet Isaiah said in Isaiah 25:8 and 9, 65:17-25, 11:6-9, and 33:24.
What did the last prophet of the Old Testament have to say about the end of the wicked and of sin? Malachi 4:1-2.

The New Testament also tells us many things about our eternal home. What does the writer of Hebrews say God has prepared for us? Hebrews 11:16.

What does Peter say about the new creation? 2 Peter 3:10-14.
The last book in the Bible has many details about our new home and the special city. Read Revelation 21:1-5, 22-27 and Revelation 22:1-7. When Jesus left, two angels told His disciples He would come back. Read Acts 1:9-11.

In Revelation, Jesus repeated the same promise to John. Read Revelation 22:12 and 20.
